What Photography Gear Do You Use?
This question of photography gear is being asked on a more frequent basis.
For years, blogs and magazine have telling brides and grooms to ask their wedding photographers what gear they use. But when a photographer turns around and says, “I use a D810e with a 70-200 f/2.8E FL ED VR”, how are you supposed to know what they mean? Well the answer is, you don’t have to.
It is the photographer’s responsibility to know about the photography gear, not the clients’.
With huge advances in technology happening every year, great quality cameras are not hard to find. Just visit your local tourist hotspot and you will see hundreds of people sporting great quality cameras of all different makes. Sure, they might be shooting in a fully automatic mode and their photos may not be world class, but they still own a fantastic camera.
The point is, just because someone owns a great camera with top notch lenses, it doesn’t necessarily make them a good photographer. Like any other trade, becoming a professional photographer takes time, practise, and dedication.
It’s not the photography gear that matters, but what you do with it.
When you ask a wedding or headshot photographer what gear they use, chances are they are not going to give you a full answer.
Professional photographers usually own lots, and lots, and lots.... and lots of gear!
We love what we do, we get excited about what each lens; flash; light modifier; latest camera can do. Yet we understand that an hour long conversation about our gear will probably scare our clients away!
Do you really want a tech geek for wedding photographers or a real person who you can relate to and feel comfortable with? We would pick the real person every time. So, as photographers, we keep our inner geek hidden so we can focus on forming a good relationship with our clients.
All that said, as we still get asked the question, “what gear do you use”, let’s give you a brief – and not too geeky – answer.
At Wilson and Lewis Photography, we use full frame Nikon DSLR camera bodies. We have multiples so we pick which camera is best for each situation - whether it be for wedding photography or headshot photography. The reason we use Nikon rather than any other brand is simply because that is what we started with. Over the years we accumulated lots of compatible lenses and it never made sense to switch when we had lots of Nikon compatible photography gear. We don’t think one brand is better than any other. Nikon, Canon, Sony, Leica, Olympus all make great cameras, but that is irrelevant. It’s all about what you do with the gear that counts.
We have a variety of lenses, a plethora of flashes, and a healthy choice of light modifiers. We have a heavy bag of stands (very heavy!) and a bunch of other gadgets, nick knacks, do-dads and what-nots. Too much to go into detail. Like any other professional photographer, we have plenty of quality photography gear and equipment for each job.
The most important thing to ask when choosing a photographer is this: Do I like their style? Do I like their personality? If you answer yes to both these questions, then you have found your photographer!
So, take a look at our work, get in touch, and let’s get to know each other. The best professional photographers are the real people you can talk to and trust.
